Combined Restrictive & Malabsorptive Procedure
At Oxford Bariatric, we take great pride in the fact that Dr. Michael L. King, one of the leading and most experienced bariatric surgeons in the state, introduced Laparoscopic and Open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery to the north Mississippi area.
According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the current gold standard procedure for weight loss surgery. It has been the most frequently performed weight loss procedure in the United States for many years. (In 2009, the adjustable gastric band will become the most commonly performed weight loss procedure.)
Gastric “bypass” is a surgical procedure designed to create a small food pouch at the upper end of your stomach with a capacity of less than two ounces. The pouch is then connected to the upper part of the small intestine, thus “bypassing” the remaining part of the stomach. Food entering the newly constructed pouch causes a sensation of fullness, then slowly empties into the intestine through the newly constructed, small outlet. This limits the amount of food or liquid you can eat or drink at one time. Because of the rerouting of the intestine, some of the calories from the ingested food are not absorbed. This leads to exceptional weight loss in the vast majority of patients.
