In 2009, the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure LAP-BAND®  and REALIZE™ Band will become the most frequently performed weight loss procedure in the United States and probably the world.

Lap band surgery is strictly restrictive in nature. During the procedure, generally performed laparoscopically, an inflatable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small stomach pouch which can hold only a small amount of food. The outlet from the pouch restricts the emptying of the food and thus creates the feeling of fullness. Although the success rate of gastric banding is somewhat lower than that of gastric bypass, it has a number of significant advantages and is generally performed as an outpatient procedure thus reducing hospital costs.

The lap band surgery is less invasive than Roux-en-Y surgery, the band itself is adjustable, and the procedure can actually be reversed if necessary.
